The end of another week – I can’t believe it. Already I’m halfway through April (well, almost…) and I actually don’t remember much about March. When you’re busy, time really does fly!
This edition of Karen’s Friday Five is focused on “old stuff.” I have picked five interesting places to check out while you’re here investigating real estate opportunities (I could show you a Victorian home in Honesdale that is just full of romance and charm.)
1.
FOR THE SWEET TOOTH: Penny Lane Candles & Candies. This nifty little place can be found on Church Street. With an authentic Victorian look, this store makes me feel as if I’ve stepped back in time.
At Penny Lane you will find “nostalgic” candies like wax lips and Mary Janes, as well as an assortment of modern candy, gifts, and candles. Let the kids have their Sour Patch Kids candy; I wanna Sugar Daddy.

SOMETHING FOR YOUNG AND OLD at Timely Treasures , on Route 6 just outside of Hawley. My kids are always bugging me to come here, not because they’re interested in antiques, knick-knacks, or antique knick-knacks. They want me to bring them to Timely Treasures for one thing and one thing only: Webkinz.
No, Webkinz are not “old” but they are an interesting draw to an antiquey place like this. Normally my kids sigh or whine if I want to go antiquing. As long as we go to Timely Treasures, my kids will be happy, I suppose.

FOR THE SUPER ENTHUSIAST - The Hawley Antique Exchange. This place is seemingly endless. There are several vendors with their wares enticingly awaiting you once you step inside the doors.
From dramatic displays of Depression Glass to old-fashioned sewing trinkets and old tools, there is a lot to see and you need to have a lot of time (this is best saved for after you purchase your vacation home and you need stuff to fill it up!)
There are several levels with numerous displays – the interior seems to stretch on forever. I could literally get lost in this place.
Definitely worth a look-see if you’re into antiques at all. Website: www.haexchange.com

OLD FASHIONED CHARM: Miss Elly’s Antiques. Set up in a late nineteenth century period home, Miss Elly’s Antiques is sure to tickle someone’s fancy.
Though not as huge as the Hawley Antique Exchange, Miss Elly’s offers a diverse collection of antiques, collectibles, and gifts from numerous vendors, spread throughout twelve rooms on two floors.
In addition to antiques, your taste buds will be tempted by the assortment of Gourmet Goodies and other samplings from the PA Dutch Country (and those folks know how to eat!).

LAST BUT NOT LEAST - The Hawley Public Library. Wrapping up this edition of Karen’s Friday Five, the Hawley Public Library is a great place to go to get “old stuff” either to borrow, to admire, or to buy – they have a used book sale going on nearly all the time in the basement.
Upstairs on the main level you will find some interesting displays to look at – and there are a few local history books that you may look at.
Maybe you’d rather borrow a video or DVD – they have some old classics as well as newer ones for you to borrow for a week at a time. If you don’t see a particular movie (or book for that matter) on the shelf, it may be available through inter-library loan.
Parked just outside the library is what lots of people call “The Caboose” but it’s actually not a caboose – it is however, an old Gravity Railroad car. It’s a lovely little library that is surprisingly robust for such a small town like Hawley. Website: www.waynelibraries.org/hawley/

These sound like great places to go and visit. I am trying to do things like this on my blog – Things to do & see in Westchester…I add something every couple of weeks.
Ruthmarie – they are very nice stores – what I like is that you won’t find another store just like it ANYWHERE. You can’t pull off the next exit and hit Cracker Barrel #850 (Not that there are any Cracker Barrels here, just sayin’…lol)
