More than a few of my real estate customers – home buyers and home sellers alike – have admitted to being
avid fans of HGTV – and I am right there with them. I love to watch Designed to Sell, especially (but only with Clive & Lisa, not the spin-offs.) I did like to follow Design Star but then life got in the way and I missed several episodes. I like the “real estate soap opera” show Buy Me; I enjoy the drama surrounding the home for sale and the desperate sellers.
Hidden Potential really intrigues me, because it can help buyers see beyond what a home currently “is” into what the home “could be.”
Anyway, tonight I was watching Deserving Design. Normally, I like Vern Yip’s designs but tonight I nearly gagged when I saw what he did.
The subject was a guest bedroom. It had beautiful, beautiful knotty pine walls. Not cheapo cruddy paneling, but warm, rich, knotty pine.
He painted it a bizarre shade of pumpkin. It was hideous.
You just don’t paint knotty pine. What a waste!!!
If you currently have a home with knotty pine walls, and plan on selling anytime soon, please do not paint them. If you hate them and want to make a change, have a contractor remove the knotty pine, put up sheet rock, and donate the knotty pine to Green Demolitions or something. Just don’t paint it. Please.
Paint cheap paneling - yes. Nobody likes that junk. But knotty pine? That’s like painting a hardwood floor or a Chippendale chair. It just shouldn’t be done.
Vern, I’m very disappointed in you.
