In most townships and municipalities here in Pike & Wayne County, home owners need to obtain permits for most home improvements, additions, decks, sheds, etc.
Yes, it’s annoying as all get out. It does cost some money, and trying to hook up with supervisors and
inspectors who have limited schedules can be aggravating. But it’s important to comply.
If you do sneak a new deck, shed, or addition without a permit, you MAY get away with it – or it may come back to bite you in the end, in a BIG way.
For instance, let’s say you put your home on the market, and let’s say it goes under contract. For some reason, somone takes pictures of your house, and someone (like the building inspector) notices that you have a deck or addition…and uh oh…you never got a permit for it.
Suddenly, Pandora’s Box has been opened. You may be required to pay a LOT more money than the original permit would have cost. You may be required to bring the structure or addition up to CURRENT building code standards; no “grandfathering in” based on when it was originally built.
You may jeopardize the sale of your home.
It’s not worth it – just do it right to begin with. In the long run, people who try to “get away” with stuff rarely come out ahead.
