Hawley Winterfest Coming To Town

Most people who know me realize that anything “winter” is not my cup of tea – unless it involves hot apple cider, an electric blankie, a comfy sofa, and a good movie or book (or my laptop with high speed Internet.)

However, I understand that winter is a beloved season for many around the area, so I have some glad tidings!

Tanglwood Ski Area is opening on or around December 19, 2008.  This is terrific news for everyone in the Lake Wallenpaupack area; last winter Tanglwood did not open at all, leaving many of us in northeast PA wondering what would happen to our local economy and winter tourism without this seasonal draw to Wayne and Pike County.

Also, the 10th annual Hawley Winterfest is slated to for December 12th – 14th 2008, so there’s something to do while waiting to hit the slopes at Tanglwood.

Though I’m a winter-phobe, I do enjoy the Hawley Winterfest a great deal.

Among the attractions this year:

Friday night will feature dinner at Torte Knox ($45 / person), historic photo displays and art gallery displays, a bonfire and FREE HOT CHOCOLATE (now you’re talking) at Bingham Park, and a concert by the Virgin Consort (Hawley Queen of Peace Church) which will include traditional carols, Medieval and Renaissance works…

Saturday, take the Winterfest Express (Stourbridge Lion train) from Honesdale and ride the rails to Hawley.  Spend a few hours in town before getting back on the train to Honesdale.   Once in town, take the Holiday House Tour, visit an arts & crafts fair, visit the Hawley Library to create a holiday card, view some more beautiful works of art, find hundreds of homemade holiday cookies for sale, ice carvings, horse and buggy rides – you know, there is just too much stuff to mention.  Visit the schedule of events page here.

Hawley is a nice little town – a real slice of Americana tucked away in the Poconos.  I’m very proud to call it my home town; come visit the Winterfest and see it in all its glory.  Though I may be tucked away somewhere warm and cozy with a steaming mug of cider….
