Lake Wallenpaupack’s New Turkey Hill Is A Hit

First, back in the 1980’s, there was Howe’s Convenience Store.  Located directly across the street from the Wallenpaupack High School, it  beckoned kids who were staying after school…come get a soda or some candy.  Even though it was technically “against the rules,” we all took the chance and snuck across the street to get some junk food and try to get to our after school activity on time.  (This was before vending machines for kids in the schools…the only vending machines were in the Teacher Lounge.)

Howe’s was not really that nice, but it was there and served its purpose.  Then, several years later, along came The Mobil Mart.  Shiny, clean, and offering delicious Green Mountain Coffee.  Eventually, Howe’s closed that location and the building stood empty for years on the corner of Rt. 6 and Atlantic Avenue.  The Mobil Mart was king.

Mornings at the Mobil Mart, along with after school hours, were insane.  Sometimes there was no place at all to park.  We needed another gas station, another convenience store.  (By the way, it’s no longer the “Mobil Mart” anymore…it’s a Sunoco station now, but old habits die hard…it’ll always be the Mobil Mart to me..)

A Variety of Convenient Foods

A Variety of Convenient Foods

After months of anticipation, the new Turkey Hill Minit Mart and Gas Station has finally opened, replacing the old dilapitated eyesore that once was Howe’s.  It is BEAUTIFUL.

You’ll find all sorts of delicious foods including breakfast burritos, personal pan pizza, sandwiches, and cinnamon rolls, to name a few…plus all the stuff you’d expect at a convenience store.  It makes the Mobil Sunoco Mart look grubby and inadequate…

Thing is, I don’t like their coffee. In fact, I hate it.  I like the Mobil Sunoco Mart’s coffee much better.

The best thing is – the competition has brought our gas prices down a LOT, for the time being.  $1.61 hasn’t been seen

Gas at Only $1.61!!

in our parts for many moons.

TRICKY ENTRANCE:  Whoever designed the entrance and exit for this Turkey Hill needs to find another profession.  The obvious assumption for entering the parking lot would be at the very front – but that’s only for folks traveling westbound on Route 6 toward Hawley – and when you leave, you can only continue west on Route 6.

If you’re traveling east on Route 6 toward Lake Wallenpaupack from Hawley, you need to turn left on Atlantic Avenue and go in the “back way.”  Continuing west?  You need to come out the same way, and exit via Atlantic Avenue.  It won’t take locals very long to figure this out, but visitors to the area may be very confused.
